I hope this blog post finds everyone well and July Fourthed out! We had an amazing weekend with tons of cooking/eating, a lot of time spent with family, and some games put in the mix :) How was your holiday weekend!?
Ya'll know I'm not a cook. Period. I suck at it, frankly. But, I am taking a chance with baking. That, I rather enjoy. So, I had my first real baking experience this weekend for our guests. A very Fourth of July Red Velvet cake. YUM!
I used the Pioneer Woman's cream cheese icing recipe (very easy) and red velvet cake from a box. To celebrate America's colors - I used fresh blueberries and raspberries! YUM :)
Look at those colors!
Here is the finished product. Mom helped me put an extra layer of icing on top of the cake to hold all of the colorful berries in.
What a gorgeous centerpiece for the dining room!
And check out that cake tray/dish - thank you, Mom. She found this one at HomeGoods; we love that store!!
And here's Pat's masterpiece of the day. Isn't that grill top fantastic!? The white corn (grilled in the husks) were from Wal-Mart for only 0.15 cents a piece! The baby-sized prime rib cuts were from Costco for an amazing price. And the skewer vegetables were also from Wal-Mart (zucchini, tomatoes, peppers, and onions, on my!).
Here's my fine grillin' man at work!
Right before lunch.
Funny story. Fourth of July = fireworks, right? Well, little did we know, dogs do NOT like fireworks. Well, atleast my little Brody doesn't. On Saturday night, we had quite a few homemade firework displays going on, and Brody freaked. He ran upstairs never to be found.
Well, Patrick, my Mom and I didn't think twice about it and went back out on the deck to continue watching fireworks from our back deck. We went back in...and the dog was NOWHERE to be found.
We only thought the worst - Pat was down the road calling Brody's name and Mom and I were searching frantically in the house. In the last minute - where did I find good ole' Brody? IN OUR BATH TUB! Poor thing was shaking and just didn't know what to do.
So, on Sunday night - the fireworks started up again. Brody found a safe spot, and I even made it safer and more comfortable for him.
In the guest bathroom, inbetween the tub and the toilet, with an old rug sheltering him :) He's so scared!
Poor thing was so tired from the night before he tried to take a nap during all of the Fourth of July hoop-la.
You've seen my beautiful hanging baskets on our porch. Well, they have currently been occupied by some creatures of the forest - and are not paying rent.
This little lady and her hubby (a very functional family) have built a nest and layed two eggs. Oy.
